WHAT IS A NEW TRAIT?
New traits is an exciting class for showing cats from an established breed that display a trait that has yet to meet the required standard for championship status. New traits are generally the colour or length of the coat, but there are others.
All exhibits are judged against their breed standard and should meet all requirements with the exception of the new trait.
Each judge will award a merit to the best New Trait exhibit, regardless of breed, sex or age.
Blue Bengals obviously have this amazingly coloured coat, that at present is recognised only as a new trait. Showing a new trait can be great fun. New traits create a talking point with judges and fellow exhibitors alike.
WHY SHOW?
Blue Bengals are truly beautiful and those of us who recognise this have a duty to show the rest of the cat fancy just how amazing they are. We need to show that we are working hard to develop this colour. We need to show that this ‘new trait’ does not detract from the beauty of the Bengal, but adds to it.
The only way to begin the process of advancement to Championship Status is to show these wonderful cats. New traits need to have a number of cats being shown before they can even be considered for advancement (the official figures can be viewed at TICA Registration Rules 33.8).
Of course showing is just the beginning, there are many elements that have to been taken into account and as with all things new, there can be no guarantees. But showing our beautiful blues to the world is a major starting point.
